When we hear the term “spiritual warfare,” certain dramatic images may come to mind: The Exorcist, perhaps. Or Elijah, calling fire down from heaven. Or the crusades. Or the phrase, “the devil made me do it!” Take a moment to think about your own conception of spiritual warfare. Remember what you’ve been taught, or what popular culture has illustrated for you. Maybe the thing that comes to mind is “God wants us to be kind. Satan wants us to be mean.” ...

Last week I spoke at Austin Christian Academy during their chapel time. I decided to share a retelling of the Parable of the Talents to encourage the kids to think about the gifts that God has given them, and how they might invest in them. At the Millar College of the Bible Winnipeg Campus, students have the opportunity to enrol in the Urban Edge program, a course that seeks to prepare them to apply their Biblical knowledge to real life—to impact the culture around them and love their neighbours as themselves. For the past few years I’ve come in to teach about art’s role in the cultural landscape: how we can learn about culture through art, and how we can speak to culture through art.
